Flight Hacks

Booking a flight can feel surprisingly complicated. There are dozens of airlines, fare types and booking websites to choose from, and the cheapest price you see at first is not always the cheapest option in the end.

The good news is that you do not need to be a flight expert to find a good deal. A little flexibility, a quick comparison and a close look at what is actually included in the fare can make a big difference.

Here are some of our favorite tips for booking flights without wasting money or making the process more complicated than it needs to be.

How to Find the Right Flight Without Overpaying

Flight prices can change constantly, and two seemingly identical flights can end up costing quite different amounts depending on when and where you book them. These simple tips can help you find a flight that works for both your trip and your budget.

1. Be Flexible With Your Dates

If your travel dates are flexible, use that to your advantage. Sometimes moving your departure or return by just one or two days can make a surprisingly big difference.

It is also worth checking different days of the week. Depending on the route and season, flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday may be considerably cheaper than travelling at the weekend.

Even shifting your trip by a few hours can occasionally save you money, so do not immediately book the first option that looks good.

2. Compare the Total Price, Not Just the Ticket

A flight advertised for €40 can quickly become much more expensive once you add a checked bag, seat selection and other extras.

This is particularly common with low-cost airlines. Before comparing two flights, check what is actually included in the fare. If one ticket includes a cabin bag and the other does not, the cheaper-looking option may no longer be the better deal.

Look at the final price you would actually pay, not just the headline fare.

3. Do Not Ignore the Timing

There is no universal rule that says you always have to book a flight months in advance. It depends heavily on the route, season and destination.

For popular holiday periods and long-haul trips, booking earlier is generally a good idea. For shorter trips outside the busiest travel periods, you may sometimes find attractive prices closer to departure.

Our advice: do not rely on one magic booking window. Start checking prices early and keep an eye on how they develop.

4. Check Nearby Airports

Your local airport is not always the cheapest place to start your journey.

If you live within reasonable driving distance of several airports, compare them. A slightly longer journey to the airport can be worthwhile if the flight is significantly cheaper.

The same applies to your destination. Sometimes flying into a nearby airport and taking a train or bus for the final part of the journey can save quite a bit.

Just remember to include the cost and time of getting to and from the airport before deciding.

5. Consider a Stopover

Direct flights are usually the most convenient option, but convenience often comes with a higher price.

If you do not mind a stopover, compare connecting flights as well. On some routes, the savings can be substantial. A longer connection can also turn into an opportunity to spend a few hours or even a day in another city.

That said, do not choose a complicated connection just to save €20. If you have to change airports, wait for many hours or risk missing your next flight, the cheaper ticket may not be worth the hassle.

6. Set Up Price Alerts

If you are not ready to book immediately, price alerts can be extremely useful.

Services such as Google Flights, Skyscanner and KAYAK allow you to monitor routes and receive notifications when prices change. This means you can keep an eye on a flight without checking the same route every day.

It is especially useful when you already know roughly where and when you want to travel but are still waiting for a reasonable price.

7. Watch Out for Extra Fees

This is one of the easiest ways to accidentally turn a cheap flight into an expensive one. Check the rules for:

  • Checked baggage
  • Cabin baggage
  • Seat selection
  • Meals and drinks
  • Changes and
  • cancellations
  • Payment or booking fees

Also pay attention to the airline’s baggage dimensions, not just the weight allowance. A bag that technically weighs less than the limit can still be rejected if it is too large.

8. Compare Booking Platforms With the Airline

We usually recommend comparing both options.

Booking platforms can sometimes offer a lower fare or make it easier to compare several airlines at once. On the other hand, booking directly with the airline can make things much simpler if your flight is changed, cancelled or significantly delayed.

For this reason, a small price difference is not always a reason to choose a third-party booking site. If the airline is only €10 or €20 more expensive, booking directly may be worth it for the easier communication and support.

9. Check the Connection Carefully

A cheap flight with a short connection can look fantastic on a comparison website, but make sure you understand exactly what the connection involves.

Is it one booking or two separate tickets? Do you have to collect and recheck your luggage? Are you changing terminals or even airports?

When booking separate tickets yourself, leave plenty of time between flights. If the first flight is delayed, the second airline generally has no obligation to wait for you.

Our Simple Flight Booking Strategy

We usually recommend keeping things simple. Start by checking a few different dates, compare nearby airports if that is practical, and look at the total price including baggage and other extras.

Once you have found a flight that fits your schedule and budget, compare the price with the airline directly. If the difference is small, booking directly is often the more straightforward choice.

There is no secret formula that guarantees the cheapest flight every time. But with a little flexibility and by looking beyond the advertised ticket price, you can avoid many common mistakes and often save a decent amount of money.

And perhaps most importantly: do not spend three hours searching for a flight just to save €12. Your time is worth something too.
